A Guide To Having A Good Day

Have you ever had ‘one of those days’?  You know the ones, where no matter how hard you try, everything seems to just go wrong?

“The stress is killing me!”

When you’re sitting in terrible traffic in the morning, running late for work, and you spill coffee all down your clean white shirt, you may find yourself thinking things like: “This commute is killing me. This traffic is a nightmare. This is completely stressing me out. I'm dying under the pressure”. 

The truth is that your mind is listening to everything you tell it and responds directly to your instructions.  If you tell your mind that you’re under threat - that something is killing you - it believes you!

Your heart rate increases, your body surges with hormones, your cortisol levels go up and you feel even more stressed and anxious. The feelings of anger and frustration escalate and make you more likely to snap at your kids, partner or colleagues, making your day even worse. You end up stressed and miserable, which is certainly not how to have a good day.

This is the first important lesson in this guide to having a good day: Your mind does exactly what it thinks you want it to do and what it truly believes is in your best interest.

Hour after hour, day after day, our brain uses the language it hears from us to inform how it should feel. 

The truth is that the human mind has one simple job: to keep you alive as long as possible. To do that, our mind is an expert at activating our stress response, known as fight or flight, to try and help us avoid, fight or flee from what it believes causes us pain or danger.

Once you know how to change your beliefs you can change your life.

If you’ve ever struggled to overcome unhelpful and negative belief systems, you know they can leave you feeling depressed, anxious, sad, and isolated, as well as physically impacting your body. The good news is that your own mind is able to change these beliefs very quickly once you know how, which you can learn with this guide on how to have a good day.

Your life will never be perfect - nobody’s is - but the way you respond to the imperfections and adversity that come your way is everything.

Give your mind the intelligible, reasonable, up to date and non-dramatic information it needs to keep your problems and challenges in perspective, and you'll find your life will become much easier and so much more enjoyable.

This exercise for how to have a good day involves naming your chatter or internal voice.  Personify it as a kind of cartoon villain if you want to, have fun with it. The trick is to see that chatter and thoughts are not inextricably part of you. They are an external force that you can rid from your mind, by saying: “Oh, there's the Monster again, coming back right when I don't need him.”

By kicking it out of your thought patterns, you are acknowledging you have power over those thoughts. By accepting that your negativity doesn't have to be who you are, but rather an unhelpful habit you can get rid of, you can begin to replace the Monster with something else. The ability to recognize your critical voice, laugh about it and then change it, is how to have a good day. 

Another secret of how to have a good day is that you always have a choice.

Even when it doesn’t feel like it, you do have a choice, we always have a choice.

You can choose to be negative, use negative language and feel lousy because of it, or you can choose to be positive, use positive language and notice how your life gets better. The choice is yours.

Change your beliefs and know that success is always available to you. 

Often, when we look at successful people, we assume they have a whole raft of superior abilities and privileges that aren’t attainable for us. The truth is they don’t. They’ve just learned how to make their mind work for them, rather than against them. This guide to how to have a good day is teaching you the same.

One of my favourite sayings is: first you make your habits—and then your habits make you. Make your habits positive and your habits will make you successful.

That is why the next habit of action is so essential: Do one thing each day in the direction of your dreams.

This may seem incredibly simplistic and obvious to you, but the reality is that it’s often overlooked or not executed properly. 

So often I have clients who work incredibly hard Monday to Friday, then hit the weekend with burnout. They then still feel guilty that they are not working on Saturday and Sunday. They often lose sight of what they are working for. In fact, most of the time, they are miserable, too.

Another important exercise for how to have a good day: choose one thing in your life that’s really important for you to achieve - in any area of your life - and commit to doing one small thing every day in service of that, even if it’s for just a few minutes.

Doing one thing every day, without fail, in service of who or what you want to be is a guaranteed way to improve the reflection you see of yourself. By doing this, you will see how powerful the practice of habit and repetition really is.

Once you begin to believe in yourself and your own capabilities, everything improves.  The effect of this practice multiplies across your life and, more importantly, your attitude towards your life. It doesn’t matter how big or small the daily action is, what matters is that you’re beginning to act like a winner.

The most important words you will ever hear are the words you say to yourself; the most important opinion is your own.

Belief without talent can take you further than talent without belief, but when you have both you are unstoppable.

The strongest force in all of us is that we MUST act in a way that is consistent with how we think and how we define ourselves. We look for proof that our thoughts are true and this is usually found whether our thoughts are helpful or unhelpful. So if you want to enjoy having a good day, make your thoughts helpful.

In summary, when it comes to how to have a good day, your mind does what it thinks you want it to do.  The words and pictures you use repeatedly are very powerful in creating how you actually feel. Your body has no choice but to react to the thoughts you think, the words you say and the pictures you construct. However, you can choose to make those thoughts, words and pictures positive and enjoy having a good day.  

Trying to change negative habits and actions only works if you first change your thoughts, because your thoughts dictate your actions and your results. Thoughts that are left unchanged can block your actions, as we are wired to act in a way that makes our thoughts prove themselves to be true. 

When you feel better about yourself you start to conduct yourself with the air of someone who is successful—which in turn makes you successful. Every habit of action is run by a habit of thought; we first make our thoughts and then our thoughts make us.

Let’s start making our thoughts more beneficial every day, until having a good day ceases being what you do and becomes who you are.
